So Many Choices – Candle Ritual!
We have already provided a brief introduction about candle magic in one our previous blog posts in this topic. Nevertheless as the topic itself is amazingly abundant we wished to grab the opportunity and create a series devoted to the undiscovered world of candles. First of all it is necessary to get familiar with the variations of candle shapes so later on you will know exactly which one supports certain goals the best.

Different types of candles
The very first thing we should understand about candles when beginning to work with them, is the different kinds there are! There are many to choose from, but here you will learn the ones most commonly used with Candle Magic. From as simple as my own creation of a button candle to as complex as a specificalyy shaped candle. But there are so many more than what I have listed here.
Button Candles – I found these tiny little creatures, which, by the way, are my very own creations to be VERY helpful with morning affirmations. As we wake up in the morning feeling sluggish and tired, this is the perfect thing to light for a quick affirmation/meditation to yourself in the mirror. These button candles are very small and only have a burn of about 5 minutes. So this is perfect for the candle diviner in a rush!
Birthday Candles – Alright, let’s get real, most of us do not have 7 hours to spend sitting in front of a huge candle meditating and staring at its flame or candle drippings. A birthday candle will burn out completely in no more than 15 minutes (make sure you didn’t buy the trick relight candles). Also, the swirls of white in them are amazing, because white wax helps to magnify your workings! (we will detail the significance of colors later)
Chime Candles – One of my personal favorites, Chime candles are most often used in more intricate spell work. These chime candles take about 2 hours to burn completely, and are perfect to call the universe’s attention to your intentions. Chime candles are the best you can use if you have to dress the candle or inscribe names and symbols into them. Feel free to contact me now if you have more questions about symbols!

Tealight Candles – Another one of my favorites. Tealight candles are best used for the same purposes as Chime candles. They take about 4 hours to burn, they are easy to find, and quite affordable. However, I do find it tough to find tealight candles in any color other than white, so I tend to use tealights during bathing ritual for example, or for a ritual that should be done outdoors! (Again, we will get into colors later)
Pillar Candles – Pillar candles come in so many different shapes and sizes, there are some that burn in a few hours and some that take up to 14 days to burn on its own. These candles are the best to use for longer rituals, and make sure you place them somewhere easy to relight. Please always remember, safety is very important, so if you cannot be around your candle for the required amount of time, do not start the Candle work.
Chakra Candles – They are an amazing combination of aromatherapy and color therapy. These awesome scented candles are designed specifically for meditation, opening, healing and cleansing the chakras, and should not be used for candle ritual or spell work. They are vibrant in color and scent, and they have their own holistic approach to our own bodies. They can be burned and blown out again and again, whereas with candle magic and spell work, you should use a virgin candle every time, and it is also important that the flame is pinched or snuffed out. It is considered insulting to the spirits and the elements.
Beeswax Candles – One of the more expensive types of candles, they come in all shapes and sizes, and can be used for any of the above purposes, however, you will find that beeswax candles are more powerful than regular candles. So when you decide to use one of these, make sure to get your money’s worth, and use it with super special workings. I tend to use these candles when I have to let it burn on its own, or in workings where I can light it again. Have to get my money’s worth!
Figure Candles – There are so many!!! And I have much love for all of them! From animal shapes to human shapes, and quite literally everything in between you could imagine. Figure candles embody specific people, situations, deities, concepts, even pets and animals. Sometimes Candle ritual and spell workings require you to use these. The only problem I have with these candles is actually bringing myself to burn them! They are unique and to me, highly collectable!
So we have covered the most popular candles for spell work and Candle Magic, and most that are also affordable. However, there is some Candle Magic that requires a much longer burning time, and perhaps even specific shapes. Most workings require you to use virgin candles, that means to use a candle that has never been lit or inscribed. This is why I work mostly with button, birthday or chime candles.
