7 Best Home Remedies for Cold and Flu – The Power of Nature Series, I

Prevention

Naturally prevention is always better than the cure, but many of the same herbs that keep colds and flu away, will also help you get rid of it faster. Of course, once you have a cold or the flu the best advice is still “get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluid and take plenty of vitamin C”. As always, before treating yourself at home by using any of the suggested natural home remedies, you should consult your doctor first regarding any medical condition. Some herbs do react with certain medications. Grandma was right about drinking hot liquids since cold viruses reproduce best at temperatures slightly below normal body temperature. Hot herbal tea is just the thing to soothe a sore throat, decongest, and to relax a cough.

GARLIC

Garlic has been considered an herbal “wonder drug” since ancient times. It is one of the most powerful herbs in treating colds and infection since it has wide-ranged anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Garlic appears to shorten a cold’s length and severity. Some people eat raw garlic daily to help support their cardiovascular system, and it has the benefit of boosting the immune system as well.  One of the active compounds of garlic is allicin, which is destroyed by cooking. Another is Sulfur, which is anti-microbial. It has been suggested that organically grown garlic tends to have a higher sulphur level and a greater benefit to health. Because of its odor, many people prefer taking capsules or tablets, so as to avoid having the dreaded “garlic breath.” Garlic also combines well with echinacea to fight against infections. The body does not appear to build up resistance to garlic, so its health benefits continue over long periods of time. Garlic will be your number one weapon to fight flu and cold if you chose to fight with the help of natural remedies. Feel free to share your experiences in my free chat room.

Other than putting garlic in chicken soup, eating it raw or taking capsules, you can make a home-made cold syrup by placing garlic cloves in a jar and covering them with honey, leaving it to sit overnight. The honey, which is also a natural anti-bacterial, draws juice from the garlic that is good for sore throats and chest infections.

ONIONS

Onion has similar anti-viral properties to garlic, being a close relative biologically and containing many of the same compounds. Use onions and leeks in your cooking whenever possible if you have a cold or are around people who do. You can also steep raw onion slices overnight in honey as with garlic for homemade cold syrup.

ECHINACEA

Echinacea ranks as the most well-known modern herbal cure for the common cold and it has been used by American Indians for hundreds of years. Echinacea increases levels of properdin, a compound that activates the immune system, and increases the production and activity of white blood cells. So when you feel the cold coming on, use an echinacea tincture or drink echinacea tea. It is important to try to take it before the full onset of a cold or flu, but doesn’t do much to prevent colds. Don’t take it for prevention, many studies have shown that you would just be wasting your money.

Echinacea is also safe for children with colds, says Linda White, M.D., coauthor of Kids, Herbs, & Health. Many companies make echinacea glycerites which are suitable for children.

GINGER

Ginger contains nearly a dozen antiviral compounds, and several have specific effects against the most common rhinoviruses. In both ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is considered one of the best home remedies for colds. It is a pain and fever reducer, a mild sedative to encourage rest, an antiseptic and helps to break up mucus and congestion. It is invaluable for preventing and treating colds, sore throats, inflammation and soothes the stomach.

Ginger makes a tasty tea, can be used in cooking and flavoring food, and works great in a vitamin C enriched fruit smoothy. To make Ginger tea, steep 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger in 1 cup of boiled water for 10-15 minutes. If you use dried ginger powder use 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon of powdered ginger per cup. Contact me for further tips on using Ginger.

LIQUORICE ROOT

Licorice contains antiviral compounds that induce the release of interferons, the body’s own anti-viral fighters. Pleasant tasting as a tea, it is an expectorant and an anti-inflammatory, easing bronchitis, throat problems, colds and coughs. When combined with slippery elm bark, the tea provides remarkable relief for a sore throat, and fights against stubborn coughs and lung infections.

SAGE

Sage has strong anti-bacterial properties and is one of the best know ingredients of real home remedies. A traditional remedy for an inflamed throat is to gargle with hot sage tea, or with a sage, apple cider vinegar and honey mix. Sage also helps with fevers, calms indigestion, and is an expectorant, loosening phlegm in the lungs.

PEPPERMINT

Peppermint is a tried and true remedy for bronchitis, colds and flu. It is an expectorant, clearing sinuses and allows breathing. Peppermint calms the stomach, eases cramps, and stimulates the appetite, making it an excellent tea when the stomach is upset. It a very safe herb, even for children, who will be reminded of peppermint candies.

There are many other herbal remedies – these were just a few. Be sure to look for good books on herbalism at your local book store, health food store, or magical shop.
