Natural remedies II – Herbs for High Blood Pressure

Herbs can indeed lower blood pressure and aid cardiovascular health.

Recently, my own blood pressure began running high, likely caused by the current medication I am on because it is a common side effect. I tried one of the common medications, and found out I was highly allergic to that. So I decided I would turn to natural remedies before I tried medication again – which I can do because my condition is between pre-hypertensive and stage one hypertension. So I began exploring quite a few articles, and thought I should pass on the information. Be aware the effects may not take place right away, as supplements may take weeks or months to produce true results. As for myself, the herbs and supplements I began taking started to work in just a few days – turmeric, cinnamon and garlic, even before I added several more to the list. Each herb treats a different aspect of high blood pressure, so pay attention to your symptoms and general health. As always, please consult your physician or naturopath before making important decisions about your health.

Natural remedies *Turmeric/Curcumin

Turmeric has so many health benefits that are not only curative but protective, you may wish to consider adding it to your diet or list of supplements you take daily. Turmeric acts on high blood pressure by reducing inflammation in the body, maintaining cardiovascular health through the blood flow. Turmeric works best when combined with black pepper, expanding blood vessels and keeping them clear, and also improves liver metabolism. It lowers cholesterol, and has anti-clotting properties.

 *Hawthorn

Hawthorn has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years among the basic remedies. Hawthorn has a positive effect on the whole cardiovascular system; reducing blood pressure, increasing circulation, preventing clots, and helping to stabilize the heart even in cases of heart failure. It is available in the form of capsules, extract, tea, and as a loose herb.

 *Rhodiola/Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola acts in several ways to counteract high blood pressure and associated cardiac issues. It directly affects the adrenal gland, reducing the chemicals produced by our body (catecholamines and corticosteroids) in response to stress. These stress hormones raise blood pressure, potassium level, cholesterol, and increase heart disease risk, and so rhodiola is effective for treating cardiac problems which are aggravated by stress. It also aids increasing the intercellular calcium in the heart, regulating and strengthening heart muscle contractions – stabilizing the heart against arrhythmia that may be caused by high blood pressure.

 *Cinnamon

Blood pressure
Georgetown University did a study in 2006 stating that cinnamon, as one of the best natural remedies contained properties that were effective in lowering blood pressure. Other studies have found that cinnamon lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels in diabetics. Cinnamon combined with magnesium, a proper diet and lifestyle changes may lead to overall reductions in blood pressure up to 25mm Hg. You can take cinnamon in the form of a capsule or with food. In order to expect it to be effective, it should be taken with every meal.

 *Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne’s effects on blood pressure are fast, as it is a natural vasodilator, expanding blood vessels and opening circulation throughout the body. It can be taken in the form of a capsule, mixed in food, in tea or soup. My favorite way is hot sauce – it makes it easy to add to any meal.

 *Cardamom

In the Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics, a study was published that detailed how 20 subjects, newly diagnosed with primary hypertension, were administered 3 g of cardamom powder. In three months, their blood pressure was reduced without any side effects. It also was reported to have broken down blood clots without altering blood lipids and fibrinogen levels. You can add cardamom seeds or powder to your meals, or take in the form of a capsule. Very good one among the natural remedies.

 *Garlic

King of natural remedies. Garlic’s sulfur-containing compounds include allicin, and act by relaxing and dilating arteries to result in lower blood pressure. The reduction has been less than 10mmHg (less than 10%). Studies have used 600-2400 mg of garlic powder or aged garlic extract in single or divided doses, taken for up to 12 weeks. Using garlic medicinally may interfere with many common medications and conditions, so be sure to check the effects before a long-term usage.

 *Celery Seed

Chinese medicine had been using celery for long to lower blood pressure for people with hypertension, and modern studies also back up its medicinal value. Celery is a diuretic, be it the seeds or the whole plant. It can be juiced, included in food preparation, or taken in the form of capsules.

 *Cat’s Claw

Another herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, it treats hypertension by having a profound effect on calcium levels in the cells of the body. It can be easily found at the health food store in capsule form.

Blood pressure

 *Hibiscus

In studies, hibiscus tea and supplements have been found to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Consider taking stevia with your tea, which also has an effect on hypertension.

*Oregano

This herb is good for so much more than Italian cooking. It contains the compound carvacrol, which has been used in studies to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It has been advised that for a medicinal effect, at least one tablespoon per day is needed. Capsules may be an easier way of intake.

There are other herbs can be used as natural remedies you may wish to look into, such as rosemary, bayberry, danshen, pycnogenol (pine bark extract), ginkgo biloba, valerian, yarrow, maitake, arjuna, skullcap, gotu kola, jatamamsi, nutmeg, burdock, and kelp.

Be well! Many Blessings!
