At Oranum, we pride ourselves as leaders in the spiritual community, supporters of art and creativity – and in bringing ancient knowledge to the digital age.
We are very disheartened by the events relating to (and leading up to) the tarot deck copyright infringement case with creator, Baba Studios, but we would like to explain ourselves and clear our name from this negative light.
As a long-time provider of tarot-card readings, a few months ago, Oranum’s product development team decided to create a promotional deck – and launched a search for a marketing/ design agency to help them procure illustrations. Subsequently, a business deal was brokered with a third party service provider, who asserted they owned the rights to the art work, and Oranum’s team had no reason to question their legitimacy.
Recently, we launched a promotional contest giving away three copies of what we thought was a special-edition, “branded tarot deck” (featuring what we believed to be original artwork), and were shocked to discover that the both the artwork and copyright of the “Victorian Romantic” tarot deck is owned by Baba Studios.
Oranum had no intentions to conceal the identity of the true artwork creators – and we believed that a distribution deal had been negotiated with Baba Studios through the third party.
We would like you all to know that we are not foes to the spiritual and art community, and we hope that we can repair our reputation as a sincere provider of spiritual advice and direction. We have reached out to Baba Studios to start copyright negotiations for our unauthorized use of their tarot deck. None of the tarot decks were ever sold or offered for purchase, and we have suspended all distribution of the tarot decks, as well as removed all digital content featuring the deck from our website and social media profiles.
We sincerely apologize to Baba Studios for this massive mishap.
