Understanding Tarot – The Wands

Written By: Dr. Nikki

Known by several different names, the suit of Wands covers physical passion, struggle, personal spiritual life force and more. In a normal deck of playing cards (and in some tarot decks) the suit of Wands is represented by the suit of clubs. Depicted as Wands with new growth, Staffs, Rods, and, of course, Clubs, this suit is normally shown as something that feeds fire. Whatever their depiction, the suit of Wands speaks of passion in all its guises.

Aligned with the element of Fire (a rod or staff can burn), the Wands speak to that elemental part of us. Fire can be a fantastic tool, when controlled and used properly it can create rebirth and regeneration. Fire warms us, helps cook our food, and lights our way. When not controlled however, fire can burn uncontrollably and destructively, devouring all that is in its path. Many of the attributes of fire are represented in the suit of Wands. Fire is transformative. When you see a Wand in your spread be sure to give it serious consideration – it may be showing you where your unknown passions lie.

Wands are messengers, being responsible for passion including a physical passion or a zest for life. From Wands and passion come the spark of inspiration and a new way through toward your goals and dreams. They relate to how action, dynamic energy, and enthusiasm are processed and experienced. When you have Wands in a spread that seem to indicate a conflict, these are not serious and can lead you to a deeper sense of who you are and what you stand for. From the visceral gut reaction to the long-term passion brought to a project, the Wands are indicators of your passion for life and all that is in it.

When you have a spread that has a dominance of Wands in it, it is time to take note of your passions. This is normally an indication that you are well on your way to accomplishing your goals through hard work. Many times the Wands indicate it is time for movement, often swiftly, from a way of thinking or being because it no longer serves you. Relating to forward momentum, it can be a call for you to focus your energies on the task at hand.

As the suit of passion and strong emotions, a few keywords cannot convey all the meanings of these cards, but here are some keywords for the cards for quick reference.
