How to Do a Spiritual Protection of the Home

Written By: Psychic AlyciaRose

In another article, spiritual purification for the home was covered, which is different than protection and banishing. Although purification can remove many negative influences, it likely will not do so permanently, and has to be kept up with repeat applications. Protection for the home can be more permanent in nature, and is to be done after the purifications are finished. Protections might include charms, amulets, talismans, floor washes, incense, and living plants. Rather than go into information that is more sophisticated magickally, it is easy for an average person to use herbs and other items in terms of simple folk magick. These protections might include reflecting the evil eye, setting up barriers, repelling negative energy or negating it.

The following are suggestions from varying cultures and practices:

Iron horseshoes
They are though to be luckier when found at the side of the road, but must have been worn by a horse. Some hang them over doors with points up to contain luck to keep wealth in and poverty out, or with points down to keeps spirits out. The horseshoe is also symbolic of the moon’s power. Can be anointed with protection oil and wrapped with red cord or yarn to make it a talisman.

Bells
They can be tied to a cord, anointed with protection oil and small charms or bags of herbs can be attached as well. The noise of the bells keeps spirits from following people into the house.

Blue glass evil eye amulets
Hang wherever you wish to reflect and neutralize the energy of the evil eye. Rue is also used to remove ‘The Eye’ as well as negative magic.

Small glass mirrors
Face them outward in windows. The small craft ones you find at local craft stores work well.

Four Thieves Vinegar (see s previous article for recipe)
It can mark the boundaries of your yard, and to mark the threshold of a house so none of ill will can enter. (Warning, it tends to kills grass and weeds).

Sea salt and vinegar (I like Apple Cider)
Create a chemical reaction that is baneful to negative spirits. Place in the corners of the room or house and open the windows a crack to let the spirits out. Be sure that the containers you use are glazed ceramic or glass since the chemical reaction can erode plastic and metal.

Planting herbs
Grow herbs with protective properties, such as Basil, Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Violet, Angelica, Thistle, Honeysuckle, or Fennel outside your home. Add live plants such as Rosemary, Basil, or Aloe into your home. Later you can use the dried herbs in protective sachets or incense.

Trees
Plant live Rowan trees by the entrance to your home. Adler is also protective. Rowan twigs can be wrapped in red yard like a ‘God’s Eye’ to protect the home.

Basil
Sprinkle it around the house to ward. There is an old saying, “Where Basil grows, no evil goes!” and “Where Basil is, no evil lives.” A gift of Basil given to someone moving into a new home will bring them good luck.

Angelica
Angelica is useful for protection against negative energy and magick, and is easily used in incense, and floor washes. Sprinkle around outside your home or the perimeter of the yard.

Bay leaves
Bay Leaves are sacred to the god Apollo. Place a leaf in the corner of each room in the house to protect everyone who lives there, including from magic.

Onion or Garlic braids
Hang them over doors and windows as all purpose protection. Discard and burn when they become too old.

Ivy Plant
Plant or hang an ivy plant by the front door to protect the home and to discourage unwanted guests.

Thyme
Add it to floor washes, incense, charms, and to hang in the home. Also attracts good health for those living there.

Vervain
Vervain is an all purpose herb of protection for places and people.

To make a Fiery Protection Oil use 1 tsp. of the following:

  • Dragon’s Blood Resin
  • Frankincense
  • Myrrh
  • Ginger Root
  • True Cinnamon
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Angelica Root
  • Bay Leaves
  • Sage
  • Black Pepper
  • Pink Sea Salt
  • Red Sandalwood

Grind all together to a powder and add 2 cups Olive Oil. Place in jars and place in the sun’s strong light for one day, preferably on Sunday – perhaps adding a blessing to your favorite protective deity, or saint. An excellent day would be to prepare this on the either solstice. The components will sink to the bottom, leaving the oil on the top, which should turn a reddish hue after a few weeks of steeping. This oil now can be used. Rub a drop on the window sills and door jams of your home to keep away evil influences.

Enjoy! Many Blessings!
