“Sly as a fox,” “stubborn as a mule,” “crazy as a loon,” “meek as a lamb,” “slippery as an eel,” “horse power,” “stronger than an ox,” “meaner than a snake.” Our daily speech is full of references to the messages the animals have for us.
Indigenous beliefs from the Aborigines of Australia to the Native Americans of North America and the world over share a tradition of the knowledge of the animals and the lessons they can teach us. Animal omens and messages are a part of our natural world and the animals have much to say to those who will listen.
Animals can speak to us in a number of ways. One of the biggest is that they will make a change in their activities. You may have been watching the robins dart for worms in the grass all spring long and then, for no known reason they disappear and you do not see them for a few days. This could indicate a need to pay more attention to family and loved ones.
If you notice that you are seeing an animal with a marked increase in frequency, it may be time to pay attention to what the animal is trying to say to you. A staring match with an animal could indicate that there is a message from that animal for you. However, how do you know what message the animal is trying to convey?
Of course, you can always visit with one of our knowledgeable readers at Oranum.com; but it is not that hard to ascertain much of what our animal friends have to tell us. First, take note of any interactions you have with an animal. Are you just seeing pictures or representations of the animal (which may indicate a softer tone to the communication)?
Once you have identified an interaction, the next thing to do is consider the animal you are having the interaction with. Does this animal have a special meaning to you? Is it an animal you feel a special affinity with; or, maybe, you have a deep visceral negative reaction to it? Make note of these initial feelings or emotions.
Here in our corner of the world, the ruffled grouse fills the spring air with their drumming and thrumming. This year was our first in a new location and the grouse were so plentiful it was like a drum band in the woods. In animal speak the grouse invites us to join in the dance of life. I had been turning in to the proverbial workaholic and the grouse reminded me to take the time to enjoy more and work a little less.
Another way animal speak comes to us is through our dreams. If you find yourself dreaming of a specific animal, it may be worth your while to figure out what the message is for you. Do not be afraid to use your intuition for the meaning of the message. You, more than anyone else, know what that animal means to you!
