The name of the holiday distinctly reflects the later Christian influence. For Christians, the First of November is the holy day, All Saints Day. Called All-Hallows (celebrating the “all hallowed” saints), the night before was referred to as All-Hallows-Eve; which eventually shortened to Halloween.
